HJJ Work in Japan! Relay Talk #023"Phyllis E. Washington"(American/German)
Q1 : Why did you decide to come to Japan?
Ans. : I wanted a chance to experience Japanese culture and traditions first-hand. I love learning about new cultures and languages! Plus, I enjoy traveling and Japan has so much to offer in the way of sight-seeing.
Q2 : What was your biggest problem at first?
Ans. : The biggest problem for me has definitely been the language barrier. I came to Japan with a zero knowledge base of the language. But, after 4 months Ive been surprising myself at how much Ive learned.
Q3 : What surprised you most about Japan?
Ans. : The weather was a shocker for me. Living in Nagoya this summer has been super humid and sticky.
Q4 : What do you do in Japan now?
Ans. : I work as an Assistant Language Teacher in an elementary and junior high school. I really enjoy working with children and this has been the ideal position for me. This is both a rewarding and enriching experience.
Q5 : Do you have any favorite place in Japan?
Ans. : My favorite place is Osu Kannon in Nagoya. It has many funky/hippie shops and great places to grab a quick cheap bite to eat.

HJJ Work in Japan! Relay Talk #022"L'Hériteau Juliette"(French)
Q1 : Why did you decide to come to Japan?
Ans. : I am half Japanese, but I have never been in Japan for more than holidays or short-term internships. I wanted to have an experience of “real life” in Japan, and to know more about my mother country, especially since I’ve been teaching Japanese in France.
Q2 : What was your biggest problem at first?
Ans. : I came with nothing but my optimism, and had to find a job and a place to live. Hopefully my lucky star is twinkling above Japan and I had got everything within 3 weeks!
Q3 : What surprised you most about Japan?
Ans. : I didn’t expect to meet funky Japanese people, and I am always surprised by what I call their high level of amateurism. Most of them are fire dancers, DJs or break dancers, musicians, painters or craft workers, have a blog or write a diary “just for fun”… and when I draw a tomato, people think it’s an apple.
Q4 : What do you do in Japan now?
Ans. : I’m assistant English teacher in 2 public schools, 1 Elementary and 1 Junior High… and incidentally spying the education system, which is miles away from the way French grown-ups are built up.
Q5 : Do you have any favorite place in Japan?
Ans. : I spent my winter holidays in Takayama (Gifu Pref.) and I found the place really beautiful. But I also love to temples, karaoke, onsen (hot springs)… and wherever you grab your chopsticks and enjoy Japanese food.

Despite my understanding of the language, every day I have a bit of cultural shock. Sometimes I was like Don Quichotte, struggling against an enemy invisible to any Japanese. So if you feel like that, here’s the tip: let things be, and carpe diem.

Q2 : What was your biggest problem at first?
Ans. : I didn’t really have any cultural problems when I first came to Japan, but it was a little difficult to save money at first.
Q3 : What surprised you most about Japan?
Ans. : The incredible amount of packaging used for food surprised me, along with some of the English t-shirts.
Q4 : What do you do in Japan now?
Ans. : I teach English at elementary and junior high schools in Shikoku.
Q5 : Do you have any favorite place in Japan?
Ans. : I like the various temples in Kyoto a lot, but I've enjoyed living in Matsuyama the most.

HJJ Work in Japan! Relay Talk #019"Paul Washburn"(U.S.A.)
Q1 : Why did you decide to come to Japan?
Ans. : About five years ago, I came to Japan on a two-week vacation and truly enjoyed the experience. However, I wanted a more in depth look at Japan and her culture, so when I had an opportunity to come work here three years ago, I jumped on it and never looked back.
Q2 : What was your biggest problem at first?
Ans. : When I first got to Japan, everything seemed so different, that I was afraid to go out of my apartment. It took me a week to figure out how to use my washing machine! But as I slowly explored my neighborhood, then my town, then the neighboring cities, on my way back to my apartment one day, I found out that I was on my way "home."
Q3 : What surprised you most about Japan?
Ans. : Besides the toilets? At first, everything was strange to me. The food was quite amazing; although you can get many kinds of Western food here, there are all kinds of food that you would NEVER see back home. Also, as I lived here for a while, the Japanese ethic of dedication and pursuit of perfection really surprised me. I've never felt safer in my life, and am constantly amazed by the little things that you just wouldn't see back home.
Q4 : What do you do in Japan now?
Ans. : Now, I'm an elementary school teacher. I teach at four schools on a rotating schedule, and it's the best job I've ever had. Going to a school, especially an elementary school, I can see what values are instilled in the children. And not only that, I can have a big impact on them as well! I am often their first glimpse at foreign people and their cultures, and am a role model for them as well. All the kids love their class time with me, and I turn put my all into giving them the best lessons that I can. This job has truly changed my views on children, and has helped me open my horizons in ways no other job has.
Q5 : Do you have any favorite place in Japan?
Ans. : Picking one out of so many is hard. I love the fast pace life and excitement
of Tokyo. I love ancient Kyoto with all its temples. I love the view from
the top the top of Mt. Fuji, and watching the sunrise there. I love my
playgrounds at my elementary schools at recess time and playing with my
students there. All these places and more, make up what is "Japan" for me.

Q2 : What was your biggest problem at first?

Q4 : What do you do in Japan now?
Ans. : I am working as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) for W5 Staff Services at a junior high school.
Q5 : Do you have any favorite place in Japan?

Q1 : Why did you decide to come to Japan?
Ans. : This is my 2nd time in Japan. The 1st time I came was when I was fresh out of college. At the time, I just wanted to travel, meet new people and learn some Japanese. After that I went back to Boston for 2 years. But I found that my life was more satisfying in Japan because it was more challenging and healthier for me. So I came back.
Q2 : What was your biggest problem at first?
Ans. : I'm kind of tall and I hit my head on everything. On trains. In castles and temples. Even in my own apartment. I should have brought a helmet.
Q3 : What surprised you most about Japan?
Ans. : I was surprised by the amount of English there is in advertising (albeit, sometimes used incorrectly). Compared to countries like China or Thailand, it’s all over the place!
Q4 : What do you do in Japan now?
Ans. : I have a few jobs now. The main one is teaching business English at Japanese corporations. I also have several private students. In addition, I am writing my own English text book.
Q5 : Do you have any favorite place in Japan?
Ans. : Kansai! I love the mixture of old and new and having 3 different cities (Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto) to go to whenever I like. The people here are also so friendly and funny. And the food is so much better here.

HJJ Work in Japan! Relay Talk #015"Jennifer"(United States)
Q1 : Why did you decide to come to Japan?
Ans. : Such is a VERY long story... ;) Alright, I actually first came here just last year as an university exchange student. I came because of my life-long interest in traditional Japanese culture/history and my college-years interest in anime/manga. I decided to stay because of the fact this is the first place I ever felt I wanted to call home and the people. :)
Q2 : What was your biggest problem at first?
Ans. : What is STILL my biggest problem- LANGUAGE! I have been studying Japanese for over three years now and, well.... it's not pretty! >_< Hardest for me is listening, though- reading and writing aren't too bad. But I cannot give it up. I know if I keep trying, I will get it eventually.
Q3 : What surprised you most about Japan?
Ans. : Heehee, actually it is the little things that always catch me off guard- not the big things like language and cultural etiquette. No, it is things like: “Why are there vending machines EVERYWHERE?!” Even on mountain tops!” and “Why do people always line-up for the train? Where I came from, everyone just tries to get on all at the same time!” ;) Not as much of a surprise, but more of a calming reassurance is how much Japanese people are just like people everywhere else when it comes down to it. The stereotypes simply aren't true.!
Q4 : What do you do in Japan now?
Ans. : Right now, I am working as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) in Hyogo-ken. My current – and first!- position is at a junior-high school and I love it! Not that it is always easy; sometimes the kids are nuts and I want to help everyone at the school more. (The teachers work sooo hard for their students. I wished I realized THAT when I was a student....) But overall, it's a wonderful job- everyone is so nice and I learn more everyday about REAL Japan!
Q5 : Do you have any favorite place in Japan?
Ans. : Of course! I'd say that Kobe is right up there- the combination of the mountains and the ocean is just breath-taking and Kobe is a lovely, interesting city. But I also adore Hiroshima- not just because of it's vital historical significance- it also has a current bright environment.

Ans. : Im working as an assistant english teacher at junior high in Takatsuki for W5.

Q1 : Why did you decide to come to Japan?
Ans. : The timing was just right. I had finished my bachelor’s degree. I really wanted to discover Japan for myself. My wife was in her early months of pregnancy and basically it was now, much later or maybe never. But all the arrows were pointing in Japan’s direction.
Q2 : What was your biggest problem at first?
Ans. : I wanted to get settled in as much as possible before the baby’s arrival. Such as unpacking and organizing everything, do my best in finding/picking a job and learn more about the language and culture.
Q3 : What surprised you most about Japan?
Ans. : The Japanese people. Back home, I knew people who really give their all in their work. But in Japan, this seems to be true for almost everyone. I am deeply impressed by the teachers at my school. Not only inside the classroom, but in the numerous hours they give to organize all the extra activities for the students. To tell the truth, I really envy their talent.
Q4 : What do you do in Japan now?
Ans. : I teach English as an assistant language teacher at a junior high school for W5 Staff Services and change many diapers.
Q5 : Do you have any favorite place in Japan?
Ans. : It definitely would have to be my wife’s hometown which is Takatsuki. I really enjoy taking walks with my family and discovering my surroundings. I also hope to do some more traveling within the country.

HJJ Work in Japan! Relay Talk #009 "Amanda Ryall"(Australia)
Q1 : Why did you decide to come to Japan?
Ans : My father was in the Australian Airforce in the 1950's and was based in Japan. I was fascinated with his stories and experiences here. As a university student in Australia, I studied Japanese language and made some nice Japanese friends. I came here to study and learn more about Japan. I also loved Japanese 'anime' as a child.
Q2 : What was your biggest problem at first?
Ans : When I first came here in 1991, there were few signs & announcements in English. It forced me to study harder which was a good thing. I had also never taken trains or subways, even in my home country. I once missed my stop and was late for an interview. However, I was really touched when complete strangers helped me. Once, I went to Nara by mistake. A kind man drove me to his family's house in Nara, introduced me to everyone (including the baby), gave me something to eat and drove me home!
Q3 : What surprised you most about Japan?
Ans : I was surprised how expensive a one-room apartment was in Osaka. Having a monthly salary forced me to budget carefully or I would quickly run out of money! My husband and I are now living in a rural area and our lifestyle is more comfortable and healthy.
Q4 : What do you do in Japan now?
Ans. : I'm contracted as a full-time Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) by W5 to the Board of Education in Matsusaka city, Mie prefecture. I teach English to junior high school students in the remote countryside. Working as an ALT has been most rewarding. It allows me to use my Japanese and experience things that I could never do in the city schools - one of my schools has it's own green tea farm!

HJJ Work in Japan! Relay Talk #003 "Marco Moons"
Q1 : Why did you decide to come to Japan?
When I was in kindergarden, I met a Japanese girl. I couldn't stop thinking about her. I often asked my mother how she was doing. A friend of my mother's kept writing letters to her family.
I really liked her. I wanted to marry her, when I was a child. That's how I got interested in Japan. I wanted to go to Japan to somehow get to know her and her country. Maybe, I hoped to meet her someday. So, I finished a program about Japanese language and Japanese society, politics, law and economics.
Part of that program was to do a traineeship at a Japanese company. Since, I am a translator I could do a traineeship at a Japanese translation agency: W5 STAFF SERVICES. I really liked my job at W5. At W5 I met a girl when I had to give a talk about Belgium at the office.
She was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. I really wanted to get to know her. She was not only the most beautiful woman I had ever seen, but she also has a beautiful and strong character. I wanted to marry her in the future. So, I tried to extend my stay at the Japanese host family's house I was staying:
I also could extend my 3-month-traineeship at the office for another 19 months. So, I was in Japan for about 22 months.
I went back to Belgium. I wasn't feeling very well and I tought I couldn't go back to Japan for a long time.
Eight years later, I returned to Japan, because I was feeling ok again.
Q2 : What was your biggest problem at first?
Ans. : I didn't have any problem at first, but later on the biggest problem for me was that, in some ways, Japanese people behave a little different from Belgian people. In general, Japanese people seem to sniff and cough more often than Belgian people do.
Q3 : What surprised you most about Japan?
In some ways, Japanese people behave a little different from Belgian people. See above
